VA Aid & Attendance for Nashville Veterans: How to Claim This Underused Benefit

Thousands of Nashville-area veterans and surviving spouses qualify for VA Aid & Attendance — up to $2,727/month toward senior care — and never claim it. Here's how to apply.

VA Aid & Attendance is one of the most underused benefits in senior care. Nashville metro families with a wartime veteran or surviving spouse can receive up to $2,727/month toward assisted living, a Residential Home for the Aged, nursing care, or in-home care — yet many families have never heard of it. Here's what it is, who qualifies, and how to apply in Nashville.

What Aid & Attendance is (and isn't)

Aid & Attendance is a monthly pension supplement paid by the VA to wartime veterans and their surviving spouses who need regular help with activities of daily living. It is NOT a VA healthcare benefit — it can be used at any licensed care setting, including private ACLFs, RHFAs, and home care agencies, regardless of whether that provider is in the VA network.

2026 maximum rates

  • Veteran alone: approximately $2,300/month
  • Veteran with dependent spouse: approximately $2,727/month
  • Surviving spouse of veteran: approximately $1,478/month

Rates are adjusted annually. Confirm current rates at benefits.va.gov.

Who qualifies

Eligibility requires: (1) active military service during a qualifying wartime period — World War II (Sept. 16, 1940–July 25, 1947), Korea (June 27, 1950–Jan. 31, 1955), Vietnam (Aug. 5, 1964–May 7, 1975), Gulf War (Aug. 2, 1990–present, if the veteran also served at least 90 days); (2) honorable or general discharge; (3) need for regular help with at least one or two activities of daily living; and (4) net worth under approximately $155,356 in 2026, including a 3-year look-back on asset transfers.

How to apply in Nashville

The fastest path in Nashville is through a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) — free, trained advocates at the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services (TDVS). Call TDVS at 615-741-2931 or find the local VSO at tn.gov/veterans. The Nashville VA Medical Center (615-327-4751) also has social workers who can help coordinate the A&A application alongside healthcare enrollment. You'll file VA Form 21P-527EZ (pension application) and VA Form 21-2680 (examination for housebound status or A&A).

The 3-year look-back

Unlike TennCare CHOICES (which has a 60-month look-back), Aid & Attendance has a 3-year look-back for asset transfers. Gifts to family members within 36 months of application can create a penalty period. Consult a VSO or VA-accredited attorney before transferring assets if A&A is anticipated.

Processing typically takes 4–8 months. Apply as early as possible — ideally before placement, not after. A local Nashville advisor can help connect you with the right VSO. Get started →
