Free Senior Services Nashville Families Rarely Use (But Should)
The Greater Nashville Regional Council Area Agency on Aging funds meals, in-home support, caregiver respite, and benefits counseling for adults 60+ across 13 counties — most of it free.
The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) Area Agency on Aging & Disability is the federally designated Area Agency on Aging for 13 Middle Tennessee counties. It coordinates free and sliding-scale services for adults 60 and older — services that most Nashville families have never heard of and many who would qualify never claim. Here's what's available.
What the GNRC AAAD funds
- Home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels): Hot or cold meals delivered to homebound seniors, often daily or several times per week. Contact 615-255-1010.
- In-home supportive services: Light housekeeping, personal care assistance, and safety checks for seniors who need help at home but don't yet need residential care.
- Caregiver support and respite: Breaks for family caregivers — in-home respite, counseling, and caregiver education programs.
- Benefits counseling: Trained counselors help seniors understand and enroll in TennCare, Medicare, SNAP, utility assistance, and other benefits they may be leaving unclaimed.
- Legal assistance: Free or low-cost legal help for older adults on wills, power of attorney, guardianship, consumer issues, and senior housing rights.
- Long-Term Care Ombudsman: Free resident-rights advocates for people in nursing homes, ACLFs, and RHFAs — investigates complaints and advocates on behalf of residents.
Who is eligible
Most Older Americans Act-funded services have no income test. Any adult 60 and older in the 13-county region — Davidson, Cheatham, Dickson, Houston, Humphreys, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson, and Wilson — may receive them. Priority is given to those with the greatest social and economic need, but donations are welcomed, not required.
